ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL – Governors State opened its 2017 season by returning to the site where it all began.
The results were decidedly different on Friday than when the Jaguars made their varsity debut at the RMU Eagle Invitational three years ago.
GSU needed just an hour to dispatch Moody Bible, then rallied from a game down to overpower Rochester (Mich.) College. In the process, the volleyball squad became the first GSU team to start a season 2-0.
The Jaguars drilled 14 service aces and hit .292 in their 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 sweep of Moody Bible. Head Coach Pedro Gonzalez used all 13 roster players in the match, including newcomers Malika Johnson, Isis Lewis, Brianna Oliver, Nicole Reichert, Hayley Serbin.
After switching courts at the Athletic and Convention Center, GSU dropped its first set against Rochester before rallying for a 20-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-16 victory.
The Orange and Black set a school record with 83 digs as Ashley Pickert (15 kills, 12 digs) and Milica Maras (11 kills, 13 digs) recorded double-doubles. Erika Halverson established a team record for digs (24) in a three-game match. Setter Lizette Gonzalez distributed 41 assists.
"You never know what you're going to get in your season opener, but I was pleased with our play today," said Gonzalez. "We're still tinkering with our lineup, so we're a work in progress."
GSU continues tournament play on Saturday, meeting Culver-Stockton (10 a.m.) and Graceland (2:00 p.m.).
