CRETE, IL – Governors State opened its 2017-18 home campaign by capturing the team title at the second annual Jaguar Fall Invitational held at Lincoln Oaks Golf Course.
The Jaguars scored 588 over 36 holes to finish seven strokes ahead of IU Northwest (595), who also played in last year's edition of the Invitational. GSU trailed by three strokes after the morning's first round, but rallied on the strength of a record-low round of 287 in the afternoon. The team's 588 total also bettered the program's 36-hole scoring record (set last week) by 16 strokes.
Matt Contey finished second overall with a 143 score, establishing a school record for a two-round individual total. His second round 70 also tied a school mark. Casey Domke (146) tied for third and earned medalist honors along with fifth-place finisher John Orowick (149). Mike Lee of IU Northwest claimed the individual title with a 2-under-par 138.
"I'm extremely excited to shoot another 18- and 36-hole record," stated GSU Head Coach Mark Haines. "On given day, our top five can shoot low, which speaks to our team's depth. We had consistency from our top players, which was huge."
GSU is off until Sept. 8-9 when it travels to the Olivet Nazarene Fall Invitational to be contested at the Kankakee Elks Golf Club.
