GSU Earns Nonconference Home Win Over Taylor

UNIVERSITY PARK, IL—Playing its fourth game in eight days to open the 2021-22 campaign, the Governors State men's basketball team posted a 63-57 victory over Taylor of the Crossroads League Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Center.

GSU (2-2), which entered with an all-time record of 2-14 against Crossroads opponents, defeated Taylor for the first time in six meetings. The Jaguars received 19 points from DeAndrey Robinson, who also led the team with eight rebounds. Payton Harley chipped in 14 points and dished nine dimes.

Taylor (0-3) was led by Jason Hubbard's 15 points and six rebounds.

"We try to play as tough a nonconference schedule as we can, we feel it helps us prepare for conference," said GSU Head Coach Tony Bates. "Our guys really played well today and came away with a solid win."

GSU set the tone early, jumping to a 14-1 lead. Taylor crawled back into the game and took its first lead at the 11:16 mark of the second half on a three-pointer from Hubbard. From that point the lead went back-and-forth before GSU pulled ahead for good on a Tariq Deere free throw with 4:11 remaining.

The Jaguars hit the road for the first time this season on Tuesday, taking on Huntington, another member of the Crossroads League.
