Jaguar Basketball Suffers Road Loss at IU Kokomo
KOKOMO, IN—In its final tune-up before the start of conference play, Governor State dropped a 65-58 decision to IU Kokomo Friday evening at the Student Activities and Events Center. It was the first meeting between GSU and IUK, a member of the River States Conference.
The game's turning point occurred with 11:34 left in the second half when Trequan Spivey sank two free throws to break a 39-39 tie. The Cougars never trailed after that, building a 10-point lead with a 16-6 run.
"We had a five-minute stretch there where we couldn't hit our shots and IU Kokomo is a quality opponent," said GSU Head Coach Tony Bates, whose squad was playing its fourth-straight opponent from the Hoosier state. "The good news is we start with a clean slate for conference next week."
GSU was led offensively by the All-CCAC combo of DeAndrey Robinson and Lamar Crenshaw. Robinson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds while Crenshaw registered 18 points and six rebounds. On the other side, Spivey turned in a team-best 17 points and Desean Hampton amassed 10 points, 20 rebounds (a GSU opponent record) and seven blocks.
Governors State (2-4) opens its Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference schedule on Wednesday, hosting Saint Xavier at the Athletics & Recreation Center.
