Women's Basketball Earns First Win of the Season
UNIVERSITY PARK, IL—Governors State placed four scorers in double-figures in handing first-time opponent Bethel an 83-71 defeat Wednesday evening at the Athletics and Recreation Center. The Pilots, members of the Crossroads League, had won their first three games to start the season; GSU is now 1-1.
GSU never trailed in the game, countering BC's full-court press with transition layups. Gaetana Davis scored a team-high 18 points, Kennedy Weigt knocked down 15 points (going 6-for-9 from the free throw line) and Sharnita Breeze added 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Angelique Cowan compiled 10 points and five assists.
GSU swiped 14 steals in forcing Bethel into 31 turnovers. The Pilots were led by Malah Shelton's 13 points and 10 rebounds from Abby Williams. The visitors used 17 players in their platoon system that brings five players off the bench at a time.
"Tonight was a good test for us, to face the kind of pressure that forces you to make smart decisions with the ball," said GSU Head Coach Tonishea Mack. "We will continue to work on some things but overall I'm pleased to get our first win at home."
GSU will open Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Wednesday, hosting Saint Xavier at 5 p.m. at the ARC.
