GSU Loses Conference Opener to Saint Xavier
UNIVERSITY PARK, IL—When it comes to conference openers, it doesn't get much tougher than facing a two-time defending champion. That is the challenge Governors State faced in a 68-45 setback to Saint Xavier as CCAC play began Wednesday at the Athletics and Recreation Center.
The Cougars, 3-0 under first-year coach Travis Brewster, led from the opening tip and out-scored the Jaguars, 17-4, in the final quarter.
GSU (1-2) received a strong effort from Sharnita Breeze, who collected 15 points and five rebounds while making 8-of-12 shots from the free throw line. Jordan Towery contributed 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. In the end, GSU couldn't overcome a cold night from the floor, shooting 22.4 percent.
SXU had two players with double-doubles—McKenna Zobel (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Claire Austin (13 points, 14 rebounds).
GSU will look to get back in the win column Saturday afternoon when it travels to Lincoln.
