Women's Basketball Begins New Year with Holiday Tournament
UNIVERSITY PARK, IL—It may be the start of a new year but the Governors State women's basketball team said good-bye to nonconference play Sunday, dropping a 78-59 decision to the College of the Ozarks at the Athletics and Recreation Center.
Sunday's matinee marked GSU's debut in the inaugural Jaguars New Year's Classic, which began Saturday with the Ozarks defeating IU Kokomo by 34 points.
GSU, which slipped to 5-11 overall, will play its final 13 contests against CCAC opponents.
Wearing their road black uniforms, the Jaguars received a 15-point, 11-rebound effort from Sharnita Breeze and 15 points from Kennedy Weigt as both players were named to the All-Classic Team. Weight surpassed 1,000 points for her collegiate career, which includes the 845 points she amassed in four seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne. Freshman transfer Cashay Dixon made her first appearance in the Orange and Black, totaling six points and three assists off the bench. The short-handed Jaguars used seven players in the game.
The Bobcats (8-8) were led by Classic MVP Annie Noah, who finished with 24 points and nine rebounds. Ozarks shot 51.7 percent from the floor, converting 5-of-8 three-point attempts.
GSU will have a few days off before returning to the ARC on Wednesday, hosting St. Ambrose in a 5 p.m. tip-off.
