September 7, 2022
Men's Soccer becomes the second GSU athletic team to receive votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll. It's the first time a GSU squad received votes since men's basketball in February 2018.
 
September 20, 2022
Ivana Novakovic becomes the second volleyball player to record 1,000 career kills in a five-set loss to Roosevelt, joining teammate and fifth-year outside hitter Dunja Tatic in the record books.
 
Men's/Women's Cross Country 2022 Season in Review - Oct, 2022

Men's Cross Country CCAC Championship — Saint Francis finished in first place with 28 points with Olivet Nazarene (32) and Saint Xavier (111) rounding out the top three. The Jaguars (213) finished eighth.

Freshman Russell Ward registered GSU's fastest time with a 29:12.2 performance over eight kilometers. Finishing second on the team was Shane Watkins (31:28.0) followed by Dante Miller (31:31.2), Emmanuel Phelps (32:03.2), Christopher Montgomery (32:13.0), and Devontae Lopez (40:15.5).

ONU's Taylor Vallangeon won the individual race by 10 seconds, logging a time of 25:06.5.

Women's Cross Country CCACs — Saint Francis finished in first place with 20 points with Olivet Nazarene (44) and Judson (95) rounding out the top three. The Jaguars (232) finished seventh.

Senior Jackie Navarette registered the Jaguar's fastest time with a 23:37.9 performance over  five kilometers. Finishing second on the team was Alison Borschnack (23:53.5), followed by Diana Perez (24:15.8), Liz Rios (24:33.4), Bailey Honn (23:34.4), and Kayla Rodriguez (34:13.8).

Saint Francis's Ana Pineda won the individual race by 3.5 seconds, logging a time of 18:36.2.

"The men and women really ran tough today! It was very windy and rainy, but they stuck it out and were able to beat some teams", said Coach John Niendorf. "It is a nice steppingstone that we can build upon for next season. 

Women's Soccer 2022 Season In Review - November, 2022

Melissa Guerrero, Alyssa Rosales, Zoie Langlois, and Emely Oviedo were named NAIA Scholar-Athletes for their outstanding efforts in the classroom.

In order to qualify for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have attended one full year at the university.

The GSSU women's soccer team finished the 2022 season with a record of 2-11-1 (CCAC 2-10-1).

November 4, 2022
GSU men's soccer earned fourth straight CCAC playoff appearance in the first four years of the program. 
The Jaguars were third in the CCAC standings and completed the 2022 season with a  9-4-5 record and 8-2-3 in the CCAC Conference.
The Jaguars hosted Roosevelt in the CCAC quarterfinals and lost 2-0 at the Crown Point, IN Sportsplex.
 
Nov., 14. 2022
Standout fifth-year outside hitter Dunja Tatic of the Governors State women's volleyball team was named to the All-Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team, Tatic is the only GSU student-athlete to earn all-conference honors five-straight seasons. She was a first team selection in 2018, 2019, 2021 (fall), and 2022 (fall), and a second-team pick in 2021 (spring).
 
Tatic led the Jaguars in kills (345), digs (249), service aces (47) and points (412.5) while appearing in all 24 matches and 94 sets. The Belgrade, Serbia native is first in four categories: kills (255), points (289.0), total attacks (781), and tied for first for points per set (4.5) among CCAC players in conference matches.
 
Tatic is the only GSU player to record 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 1,000 points. She appeared in 207 consecutive matches, never missing a contest during her five seasons.
"Dunja has set records that will likely never be broken at GSU," said GSU Head Coach Pete Gonzalez. "From the first match Dunja played as a freshman, I knew she would be a special athlete.."

GSU was an overall 6-18 in the 2022 season and 1-15 in CCAC Conference matches.

December 7, 2022
Men's basketball and Head Coach Tony Bates won the program milestone 100th victory with a 75-61 home win over Cardinal Stritch University (WI) at the ARC.
Bates, also GSU's Athletic Director who started the Jaguars athletic program eight years ago - with the flagship men's and women's basketball teams, has a 106-129 record in 8 seasons.
The Jaguars have qualified for the CCAC playoffs five of seven years (was not eligible the first year of the program in 2014-2015) and were number seven seed in 2022-2023 with nine conference wins.
 
February 15, 2023
Women's basketball playing with only seven healthy players on Senior Night upset Olivet Nazarene 81-80 limiting one of the NAIA's highest scoring teams (95 point per game) to only 80 in GSU's ARC to end the home season. 
Jaguar Senior Trinity Sims led GSU with an 18 points, 13 rebounds double-double.
 
February 18, 2023
In the first double overtime game in GSU women's basketball history, the 2 OT battle saw Roosevelt University edge Governors State University 84-83 in the Goodman Center.
GSU senior guard Angelique Cowan scored a career-high 36 points and played all 50 minutes of the contest with the Jags' seven player team making big plays throughout, in the game featuring 17 ties and 19 lead changes.
Cowan hit 13-30 field goals, made 4-8 three pointers, 6-6 free throws and had five rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and a steal. 
 
Angelique eclipsed her previous career-best game of 34 points scored earlier in the season against Lawrence Tech in the Siena Heights (MI) Invitational.
Senior guard Lotte Miller played 46 minutes and had a game-high 12 assists, seven rebounds and eight points hitting 3-9 field goals.
 
February 21, 2023
Governors State University came all the way back from 22 points down in the first half and the comeback fell short losing 78-74 at #2 seed Saint Xavier University in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament.
GSU trailed 43-21 with 2:45 remaining in the first half and Saint Xavier was lighting up the scoreboard hitting 20-33 field goals (60.5%) in the opening twenty minutes taking a 45-30 lead into halftime.
 
The Cougars (23-6, 16-4) were still leading by 18 (55-37) with 15 minutes remaining in the game before the Jaguars kept battling and kept fighting including a 13-0 run as part of a 19-4 run.
 
Adam Taylor hit a jumper to put GSU within two points 69-67 with 6:17 left in the contest. 
The furious GSU come backs included 11 team steals in the game (4 by Kyle Jackson) and Tai Walters-Whitaker continued his outstanding play with a game-high 23 points, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals.
 
Men's and Women's Golf Spring Season Reviews, April 2023
 
Men's Golf: 

Roosevelt University won its third straight men's CCAC team championship beating Holy Cross by five shots. After day one, Holy Cross led Roosevelt by one shot and St. Ambrose (Iowa) by two shots in the team competition.

GSU Final Scores:

Tyler Bannon, DNP Alex Cortez, 85-84-89/258 T30 Dominic DalPolo, 135-131-116 Kevin Kompier, 89-85-102/276 and Hillel Watkins 90-87-94/271, were the GSU individual scoring rounds at CCAC. The team was 9th of 10 teams edging IU-South Bend by 20 shots after three rounds/54 holes.

Women's Golf:

GSU's women's golfers Kylie Maloney (Sr. Griffith, IN) shot 104-103 for 24th place and Kelsey Brown shot 125-136 (Jr. Plainfield South High School) competing for the Jaguars at the CCAC Championship.

Saint Xavier won the women's team title by 11 shots over Saint Ambrose and upended four-time defending champion Olivet Nazarene University who placed fourth in 2023.

GSU Athletics celebrated its 2022-2023 All-Sports Banquet and each varsity Jaguars sport picked team award winners for the season. 
The nine varsity sports award winners listed below and also upcoming May graduating senior student-athletes (May 13, 2023 Graduation) were given special Letter "G' awards from the University Alumni Association.

Governors State University senior basketball star Angelique Cowan (Ottawa, IL, Ottawa High School) was named the 2023 Student Leadership Awards - Female Athlete of the Year in a ceremony in GSU's Honors Hall.
Jaguar senior basketball, golf athlete Adam Taylor (Mokena, IL, Providence Catholic High School) was named the 2023 Student Leadership Awards - Male Athlete of the Year in a ceremony in GSU's Honors Hall.
