JAGUAR STAR ANGELIQUE COWAN NAMED 2023 GSU STUDENT LEADERSHIP AWARD - FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
UNIVERSITY PARK, IL - Governors State University senior basketball star Angelique Cowan (Ottawa, IL, Ottawa High School) was named the 2023 Student Leadership Awards - Female Athlete of the Year in a ceremony Friday in GSU's Honors Hall.
Cowan has been a four-year GSU team leader on and off the court earning previous Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete and CCAC Academic awards and she is graduating in May with a GSU Degree in Criminal Justice.
She earned 2023 All-CCAC Conference second team post season awards this year and will be back playing for Head Coach Tonishea Mack and working toward her graduate degree in 2023-2024.
Angelique led the Jaguars in scoring with a 15.1 scoring avg. totaling 422 points in 28 games for GSU in the 2022-2023 season. She also averaged 3.4 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.6 steals and hit 102-121 free throws (84.3 %).
In the 2022-2023 season she scored a career-high 36 points at Roosevelt University and scored 34 points against Lawrence Tech at the Siena Heights Thanksgiving ClassicTournament.
The 5-7 senior guard was named CCAC Player of the Week for her 7-day, 3 game totals including scoring 30 points against CCAC champion IU-South Bend. Cowan hit 10-19 field goals and 10-12 free throws vs. the Titans prior to the holiday tournament in Michigan.
The Governors State University 2023 Student Leadership Awards program was highlighted by GSU President Dr. Cheryl Green awarding the prestigious President Cheryl Green Award. Other awards included the Dual Degree Program, Admissions Ambassador of the Year, Housing Representative of the Year, and men's basketball senior Adam Taylor (Mokena, IL, Providence Catholic High School) was awarded the GSU Male Athlete of the Year award from Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach Tony Bates.
