CHARLESTON, IL - The Jaguars lost Monday at Eastern Illinois University 1-0 to end a four-game stretch to open the season against NAIA nationally ranked teams and Division I opponents. EIU scored its goal in the first half and out-shot the Jaguars 5-3 in the contest.
Governors State home opener is Thursday, 1 p.m. vs. Spring Arbor University at the Sportsplex in Crown Point, Indiana.
GSU lost last Thursday night 4-2 at the NAIA's top team, defending national champion and #1 ranked Bethel University (IN) Pilots. GSU out-scored Bethel in the second half 2-1 and the Jaguars offense was paced by Andre Croce with a goal and an assist and Dylan Villa scored a goal for Governors State.
GSU (0-4) opened the season losing at William Penn University in Iowa 2-0 last Saturday. William Penn was 11-7-3 last year and NAIA playoff participants and earned votes in the top 25 poll to start the season along with three other Heart of America Athletic Conference teams.
Jaguars Head Men's Soccer Coach Matt Eggert talked about his early season schedule. "Good to get out of the gate against a strong opponent (William Penn) receiving votes in the first NAIA poll. We're anticipating adding another 4 key players to our squad this week as the NAIA completes eligibility. Our goal was to play the toughest non-conference schedule we could on the road against teams who play different styles. Thursday at the #1 team in the nation (Bethel) will be a great test in a very tough environment. Following that up two days later against the #13 team (Grace College) will create the type of environment we hope to see as part of the national tournament," said Coach Eggert.
