GovState Track Teams Break School Records at Chicagoland Three-Day Meet Last Week at Elmhurst - Sophia Flowers Named CCAC Runner of the Week - 2nd Straight Ward-Winning Week -
GSU Coach John Niendorf reports on the Chicagoland Invitationl Results:
"This was a fantastic three-day meet this past weekend for the Jaguars. On the men's side, Clark Fremouw took 2nd place in discus and 5th in shotput. He is currently ranked 32nd in the country for discus. Andie Sima hit a personal record in the 5k, running a 16:41. Samuel Rocio took 9th overall in the 5k with a 15:08. Alex Ortiz ran a solid 5k, running 15:40 in the distance. Colin O'Brien ran a new pr in the steeplechase, finishing 3rd overall in the event with a 9:52 3k steeple. He is now currently ranked 38th in the country. He also his personal best in the 1500 with a 4:13. Randy Almarales, who had never previously done steeple before, finished 8th and ran a 10:33."
"Devon Hayes stepped up big time at the meet, running new pr in both the 1500 and the 800. He beat his own school record in the 1500, running a 4:02 for a 12th place finish. He also finished 13th overall in the 800-meter race with a big 1:57 pr. Alex Ortiz and Antoine Morgan each ran a new pr in the 1500 as well. They ran 4:15 and 4:19 respectively. Mason Reyes also pr'd in both the 1500 and 800. Branden DeLeon ran a huge 800 pr with his 2:02.22 effort. Jayson Wold beat his previous race record in the 400 with a 52.65. Jamaar Ross also beat his previous time in the 400. The 3k also featured some nice performances as well. Daniel Zavala ran an 8:49, finishing 7th overall at the meet. He is now ranked 6th in the country. Parker Griffin, Randy Almarales, Alejandro Vieyra, and Colin Jameson all hit personal records in the 3k as well. Devinn Jones and James Johnson each ran personal records in the 100-meter dash. On the jumps side, Steven Session and Devinn Jones achieved new personal bests in the long jump. The men ran a great meet out there this weekend and I was pleased to see the effort that they put into the Chicagoland Invitational."
"On the women's side there was no shortage of incredible performances this weekend. Trenyce Bonner took 10th overall in high jump and hit a new personal best in long jump. Camila Mendez ran the race of her life, beating her previous best time in the 5k by over 40 seconds, running a 19:09. Alison Sadus and Ava Tomala also had outstanding performances in the 5k. They each hit massive pr's running a 21:04 and 21:35 respectively. Gisela Alcantara hit a new pr in the 1500, with her 5:58 effort. The women's 3k ended up being an incredibly stacked race, with huge performances across the board. Sophia Flowers string of big races continues as she took 2nd overall and ran a 10:08 3k. This time places her at number one in the country for 3k. Yahaira Rodriguez ran a massive personal best with her 10:48 effort. Her and Kaylee O'Sullivan are ranked 12th and 14th in the country, respectively."
"Overall, as a coaching staff, we couldn't be more pleased with the efforts put forward from these amazing young men and women. It is inspiring to see some of these performances finally get recognized at the National level. We are looking forward to seeing how many more big personal records we can shatter as a program over the next few weeks as the season begins to wind down."
