Jaguars Battle Hard Against NECC/GLEC Regional Champions Kettering University
The Governors State University Jaguars Esports team went head-to-head with Kettering University, a previous National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) Great Lakes Regional Champion. Though the Jaguars ultimately fell in two close maps, the squad displayed grit, teamwork, and several standout performances across the lineup.
On Ascent, the Jaguars pushed Kettering in a competitive 13-8 contest. Alexah "Eggroll" Martinez anchored the defense with clutch holds that slowed Kettering's early momentum, while Otto "NPUpika" Foronda consistently created space on attack with sharp opening entries. Tanner "Ghostly" Hayes delivered steady trades in key rounds, and Matthew "Sage" Brison provided reliable utility support to keep the map within reach. Their efforts kept the Jaguars battling until the final rounds against one of the stronger programs in the region.
The second map ended in a 13-7 defeat, but the Jaguars again showed their resilience against championship-level competition. Otto "NPUpika" Foronda paced the team with a strong fragging performance, while Tanner "Ghostly" Hayes kept the match close with several late-round clutches. Together, their performances highlighted the Jaguars' potential to compete at the highest level.
"This team is just getting started," said Coach Badr. "Every match is a step forward, and we're beginning to see the potential of what this group can become. With more time, more preparation, and more belief in each other, I know we can achieve something special this semester."
Though the results favored Kettering, the Jaguars leave the series with valuable experience and confidence in their growth. The team now turns its focus to preparing for Lawrence Tech University in the Varsity Premier Tournament of the National Association of Collegiate Esports Conference.

Jaguars Smash Squad Faces Fellow Newcomers Cedarville University On Second Night of Competition
The Governors State University Jaguars Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team took on Cedarville University in a matchup between two brand-new programs eager to make their mark in collegiate esports. While the Jaguars came up short on the final score, the series highlighted the promising foundation being built on both sides.
Ronin "47Ronin" Harrington showcased his Toon Link with sharp zoning and patient play, keeping Cedarville's roster on edge throughout his sets. Aden "The Mac" Pastrana brought his trademark Little Mac intensity, landing explosive combos and forcing high-pressure moments in nearly every match. Their performances provided a glimpse into the potential of the Jaguars' Smash roster as the team continues to grow together.
"Facing Cedarville was a great experience for us," said Coach Badr. "Both of our programs are at the start of our journeys, and matches like this are what help us grow. I'm proud of how our players competed and excited to see where we can go as we continue to build throughout the semester."
With both programs still early in their development, this matchup served as an important step forward. The Jaguars will look to build on this experience as they prepare for their next test next week against Baldwin Wallace University.
