Damjanovic Named CCAC Offensive Player of the Week
UNIVERSITY PARK, IL—First-year forward Avery Damjanovic of the Governors State women's soccer team has been named Offensive Player of the Week by the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. She is the first Jaguar women's soccer player to earn the award.
A native of Wesley Chapel, Florida, Damjanovic recorded back-to-back-to-back two-goal games, finishing with six goals and 12 points against CCAC competition last week.
Damjanovic scored the game-winning goal at St. Francis (March 9) with a successful penalty kick in the 76th minute, giving GSU its first-ever road win. Two days later she tallied a pair of goals against Olivet Nazarene, a team which received votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll. The 5-foot-7 forward capped her week with two goals versus Judson (March 13), highlighted by a 15-yard strike on a direct kick. The 2-0 win over the Eagles marked the first shutout victory for GSU.
Having scored on 50 percent of the shots she's placed on net, Damjanovic owns a team-best seven goals and 14 points after five games, setting school single-season and career records for both categories. She ranks seventh in the NAIA in goal-scoring (1.4 per game average) and 14th in scoring (2.8 average).
"It was a fantastic week from Avery, she's very deserving based on her offensive production," said GSU Head Coach Ante Cop.
Damjanovic will look to extend her four-game, goal-scoring streak when GSU (2-3-0) plays host to St. Ambrose Wednesday at the Sportsplex in Crown Point.
