Men's Golf Places Third at Jaguars Fall Invitational
FRANKFORT, IL—The Governors State men's golf team received a boost from a returning veteran and a newcomer to finish third out of six teams in the fourth installment of the Jaguars Fall Invitaional. The event was held Wednesday at the SPG Green Garden Country Club, a course located 11 miles from campus that the Jaguars had competed on only once before in 2016.
St. Francis shot 306 to finish 19 strokes ahead of runner-up Saint Xavier. GSU (329) finished four shots back of SXU and in front of Trinity Christian (333), Judson (338) and Illinois Valley CC (354), coached by former Jaguar Patrick Guillfoyle.
Saint Xavier's Michael Furlong shot even par (72) to claim medalist honors by two strokes. Luke Petrovic, Nolan Weis, John Weis and E.J. Charles—all of St. Francis—rounded out the Top 5 to earn all-tournament acclaim.
Senior Kevin Kompier made his season debut with a team-low round of 78 to finish tied for sixth place. Hillel Watkins shot a career-best 82 and Adam Taylor carded an 83. GSU's lineup also included freshman Alex Cortez, who shot an 86 in his first action. Rowdy Frey (90) figured in team scoring while Tyler Bannon (111) competed as an individual.
"We're coming around as a team, the scores are getting lower as we get a few tournaments under our belts," said GSU Coach Fred Hawkins. "I think our guys enjoyed having a home tournament and the chance to play a good course."
GSU will continue its busy fall season with an appearance at the St. Francis Fall Invitational on September 13.
