Women's Cross Country Places 7th at Midwest Intercollegiate

BOURBONNAIS, IL—One of the last days of summer took its toll on runners competing at the second annual Midwest Intercollegiate on Friday.

Under a baking sun, the race time temperature reached 86-degrees, stalling some runners who had ambitions of fast times on the relatively flat course at Aspen Ridge. The conditions forced some entrants to drop out, but all five runners for Governors State finished the 5-kilometer race as GSU finished seventh in an event that drew four other CCAC schools. Host Olivet Nazarene finished with a perfect score of 15. Saint Xavier placed second (67) followed by Greenville (84), Roosevelt (117), Cardinal Stritch (125), Holy Family (151) and GSU (179).

Two-sport star Avery Fountain, who missed the team's last meet due to injury, returned to pace the Jaguars with a 47th-place finish (24:40.6). Elizabeth Rios crossed the line in 26:26.9, followed by Diamond Jones (31:41.3), Peachshaiya Bailey (34:14.1) and Milica Maras (35:33.6).

"Our women's team has been recovering from injuries and illness and they showed their competitive side today," said GSU Head Coach Kevin Kredens.

GSU is off until October 5 when it travels to the Warrior Invitational in West Allis, Wisconsin.
