BIG COMEBACK WIN 54-49 OVER ROOSEVELT - GSU DOWN NINE IN FINAL FOUR MINUTES, OUTSCORES LAKERS 17-3 TO WIN CCAC HOME OPENER
UNIVERSITY PARK, Illinois - Two huge three-pointers by Kendall Winston in the fourth quarter along with the go-ahead shot in the lane basket by Tabetha Jones and Angelique Cowan hitting key free throws down the stretch leading Governors State (5-2, 2-0 CCAC) to a 54-49 comeback win to open the 2023-24 home CCAC season at the ARC.
"Our experience helped us and our players have been in a lot of these games and we settled in and got the job done," said GSU Head Women's Coach Tonishea Mack.
"The same shots we were missing in the first half, we shot better in the third and and fourth quarters. Our defense turned into offense and into our transition game. Kendall (Winston) hit some big shots and we started to focus on the details. We work in practice on coming back with five minutes to play and and we kept working," said Coach Tmack.
Tabetha Jones led GSU in scoring with 16 points, 6 rebounds and her field goal with 46 seconds left gave the Jaguars the lead for good 50-49, and Cowan made free throws to put the 54-49 win on ice.
Junior Zareia Chevre joined Jones scoring in double figures with 14 points and "Z" had five rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots in a solid all-around game for the Western Illinois University transfer.
Coach Mack talked about the GSU field goal shooting improving in the third (9-17, 53%) and fourth (5-10, 50%) quarters with the Jaguars out-scoring Roosevelt 38-23 in the second half.
Governors State takes its 2-0 CCAC Conference record into Saturday 1 PM home matchup with St. Xavier (2-0 CCAC) and St. X beat Judson Wednesday, 82-41 in Chicago.
