#3 RANKED CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY BEATS JAGUARS 80-57 AT NAIA NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Kentucky - -

#3 ranked Campbellsville University (29-1) won its 21st straight game beating Governors State University 80-57 in the first round of the 2024 NAIA National Tournament.

The GSU Jaguars (23-7), battled all game long in the first-ever national tournament appearance for GovState and trailed at the end of quarter one 23-14 and 38-26 at halftime.

Governors State staged comebacks throughout the season and closed to within 8 points down in the third quarter (40-32, 7:19 left in third). The Tigers closed out the game out-scoring the Jaguars 21-14 in the fourth quarter and overall 42-31 in the second half.

The game had 48 fouls called and the teams were on the free throw line throughout with GSU hitting 18-24 free throws (75%) and the Tigers shooting 26-34 (76%) free throws.

GSU's season scoring leader Tabetha Jones led the team in scoring with 17 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and Jones scored 12 points in the first half hitting 3-7 field goals and 6-7 free throws.

Zareia Chevre scored 12 points and Angelique Cowan had 11 points to join Jones in double figure scoring for GSU.

Campbellsville out-rebounded GSU in the first half 21-10 and 35-24 in the game with the Tigers shooting 46% in the half ( 13-28) to GSU's 40% from the field (10-25). Da'Naria Washington scored 6 points in the half coming off the bench.

Campbellsville University beat William Carey (Mississippi) 82-73 in the second round of the tournament on Saturday, to advance to the NAIA National Finals (Sweet 16) in Sioux City, Iowa March 21-26. Campbellsville will play Menlo College (California) (20-8) in the next round, Friday, March 22, 11 am in Iowa.

William Carey beat Williams Baptist (Arkansas) 71-64 in the other first round Kentucky tournament game scoring the final 7 points breaking a 64-64 tie in final two minutes.

Record-Breaking Season For Jaguars' Women's Basketball Team

In the 2023-2024 season, the Jaguars set a new school record for wins in a season (23-7, 17-3 CCAC, 2nd place and an automatic NAIA National Tournament Bid), breaking the school record of 16 wins set in 2018-2019.

GSU Head Women's Basketball Coach Tonishea Mack was named the 2023-2024 season CCAC Conference Coach of the Year and Tabetha Jones was named first-team All-CCAC.  Jaguars' Angelique Cowan and Zareia Chevre earned second team All-CCAC honors.
