GSU JAGUARS BEAT INDIANAPOLIS 76-67 - SECOND ALL-TIME WIN OVER NCAA DIVISION 2 SCHOOL
UNIVERSITY PARK, Illinois --
GSU's Women's Basketball team beat the University of Indianapolis 76-67 at the ARC Tuesday night, Governors State second all-time victory vs. an NCAA Division 2 team. GSU under Coach Tmack beat NCAA Division II Purdue Northwest 56-52 at home in the 2020-2021 season.
The Jaguars are now 7-2 on the season and were led in scoring (21) and rebounding (9) by Tabetha Jones - GSU's blocked shots leader was Trinity Sims with 4 vs. UIndy.
Governors State came out playing well and were ahead 20-13 in the first quarter with Ce'niyah Hampton scoring eight early points and hitting 2 three-pointers. The GSU lead increased to double digits with the team continuing solid play to take a 41-30 halftime lead.
"We've been talking about consistency. That's the goal for this team to be consistent and we have a tight-knit group with high expectations for themselves and for each other," said GSU Head Coach Tonishea Mack.
"They bought into the game plan and the grit and execution to beat a great team. It's always fun to play against Division I or Division II teams and players and I am proud of my kids. Our players are great players and kudos to them (for the GSU women's basketball programs' second win over a NCAA Div II school)." said Coach Tmack.
GSU hit 10-27 three pointers (37 %) and Kendall Winston hit 4-9 threes for 12 points including two big threes after UIndy closed to within five points (66-61) late in the fourth quarter.
The Jaguars are tied for the CCAC Conference lead with a 3-0 record and play at Judson University, Saturday 1 pm in Elgin, IL.
"Our focus is on the CCAC Conference and Judson always plays us tough. We respect everyone in our conference and we have a great conference. It will be a hard, hard fight (Saturday at Judson), said Coach Tmack.
