CCAC's #1 and #2 Teams Battle Into 4th Quarter
The top two teams in the CCAC Conference battled on Saturday and GSU led 61-60 with eight minutes remaining before a 17-6 IU South Bend run in the final minutes won it for the Titans 77-67.
IU South Bend (22-0, 14-0) outscored GSU 24-10 in the fourth quarter for the home win to remain unbeaten and the #19 ranked team will rise in the NAIA rankings this week.
Angelique Cowan with a big third quarter scoring 13 points in 10 minutes to put GSU up 57-53 after three. The Jaguars fought back from 43-34 down early in the third quarter with Trinity Sims scoring five points and Jennifer Tomasic contributing five more in the comeback.
GSU's 29-23 scoring edge in the third quarter included shooting 11-16 field goals (68.8 %) and Cowan was 5-5 field goals in the third.
Cowan led the Jaguars with 26 points hitting 11-16 field goals and had four rebounds, 2 assists and a steal to continue her solid play. Cowan registered career point 1,000 Wednesday night at home vs. Judson University, 3rd all-time in GSU women's basketball history.
Tomasic 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists in 25 minutes and Sims 10 points, 6 rebounds in 32 minutes both played well for the Jaguars who next host St. Ambrose Wednesday, Feb. 7, 5 pm in the ARC.
IU South Bend came out firing and led 15-6 after five minutes before GSU settled in and Tomasic scored four points off the bench to help the Jaguars back in the game. The Titans led 21-14 after the first quarter.
Governors State (17-5, 11-3 CCAC) went on a 8-0 run in the second quarter and Da'Naria Washington hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 26-26 with four minutes remaining in the first half. The Jaguars defense limited IU to 29% field goal shooting (9-31) in the first half and the Titans led 30-28 at the break.
